Construction Manager

Reports To: Director of Engineering
Location: Multiple Locations

MAIN FUNCTION

  •  The role of the Construction Manager is to plan, execute and finalize field construction projects according to strict specifications, schedules and within budget. This includes acquiring resources and coordinating the efforts of the team members and third-party contractors or consultants in order to deliver projects according to plan. The Construction Manager will also define the project’s objectives and oversee quality control throughout its life cycle.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  •  Responsible for construction management and field supervision from project development through commissioning and start up.
  •  Provide supervision, inspection and review of construction activities to minimize impacts on operating facilities and to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, company safety/loss/environmental policies, project scope and constraints, company quality standards and applicable industry standards.
  •  Manage construction projects with a focus on quality, compliance with engineering drawings, specifications, applicable codes and standards, construction schedule and costs.
  •  Identify and manage project dependencies and critical path while planning, scheduling and tracking project timelines and milestones in logical steps using appropriate tools.
  •  Inspect and review construction activities to monitor compliance with specifications, OSHA requirements, CCC safety procedures and other regulations.
  •  Interpret and explain plans, specifications and Contract terms to Contractors.
  •  Negotiate revisions, changes and additions to contractual agreements with Contractors, consultants, suppliers and others.
  •  Direct and supervise all Contractors and sub-contractors.
  •  Take actions to deal with the results of delays, bad weather or emergencies at the job site.
  •  Investigate damage, accidents or delays at the construction site to ensure that proper procedures are being carried out.
  •  Inspecting equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors, problems or defects and developing corrective action plans.
  •  Develop and deliver progress reports, proposals, requirements, documentation and presentations.
  •  Study job plans and specification to determine appropriate construction methods.
  •  Prepare requisitions for supplies, materials and labor to complete construction activities.
  •  Prepare and submit budget estimates and progress/cost tracking reports.
  •  Develop and implement quality control procedures.
  •  Effectively communicate project expectations to team members in a timely and clear fashion.
  •  Conduct project post mortems and create Lessons Learned report in order to identify successful and unsuccessful project elements.
  •  Estimate the resources and participants needed to achieve project goals.
  •  Draft and submit budget proposals and recommend subsequent budget changes where necessary.
  •  Determine and assess need for additional staff and/or consultants if necessary during project life cycle.
CHARACTERISTICS

  •  Leadership experience and skills to manage large or multiple construction projects.
  •  Effective communicator, both oral and written.
  •  High energy level, team leader, excellent work ethic, with strong construction skills.
  •  Ability to interpret/modify/create field markups of engineering drawings.
  •  Ability to develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, schedule and accomplish your work
  •  Able to visualize how something will look after it is moved around or when its parts are moved or rearranged.
  •  Able to develop and enhance relationships with peers, contractors and suppliers.
  •  Self-confident and secure to be able to work with all types of personalities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  •  Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or related Engineering discipline preferred.
  •  Five or more years of relevant experience.
  •  Working knowledge of OSHA, applicable construction codes, standards, regulations and familiarity with the construction and environmental permitting process.
  •  Knowledge of materials, methods and tools involved in the construction and maintenance of chemical processing plants
  •  Experience in tracking and forecasting construction spending by contractor discipline.
  •  Knowledge of preparation and use of plan, elevation and isometric construction drawings.
  •  Proficient with the PC and PC-network applications including Microsoft Project and/or Primavera.
