Key Milestones


1936

Organized as a partnership between R.I. Wishnick, Continental Oil, and Shamrock Oil & Gas. First carbon black plant is built that same year in Sunray, Texas.

1954

Second plant started production in Ponca City, Oklahoma.

1955

Pilot plant added at Sunray, Texas to develop new grades of carbon black.

1958

Ownership changes: Conoco 50%, Shamrock Oil & Gas 29%, and Witco Chemical 21%.

1960

Expanded internationally by establishing plants with JV partners in France, Holland, and Italy. Ownership changes: Conoco 80%, Witco 20%.

1969

Third plant started at Phenix City, Alabama. The only carbon black plant in the southeastern U.S.

1981

Conoco acquired by DuPont. Conoco purchases Witco's 20% interest. Equities in European and Asian plants sold to JV partners.

1984

Conoco sells Continental Carbon to Witco Chemical. Company becomes Concarb Division of Witco.

1990

Added 75 MLbs. capacity at Ponca City, Oklahoma, becoming the first grass-roots expansion in the U.S. carbon black industry since 1967.

1998

Phenix City plant doubled in size when 100 MLbs. of new capacity came on stream in December.

2000

Acquired Carbon Black Business of Oriental Carbon & Chemicals Ltd. (OCCL) in India. Establishment of Continental Carbon India, Ltd.

2004

Completion of upgrade and expansion of CCIL to 65,000 MT capacity.
